Project Type : Architecture – 900 Apartments in Two Towers
Status : Design Development
“Babel” is the current manifestation of a constantly-evolving architectural idea that has been floating around the office for over ten years, known as “The Ellipse”. It has been popping in and out of the heads of the designers, connecting with other projects in the office, the projects of other offices, artwork we’ve come across, new books we’ve seen recently and old ones we’ve found in the dusty corners of the material library.
In it’s current form, Babel consists of two individual towers- one 20 stories high, the other 30- situated on a Z-shaped piece of land in an undeveloped section of Whitefield, Bangalore. The tower masses are carved through with two types of “hanging” gardens: The massive interior core is an open shaft crossed with garden platforms and the exterior ring is punctured with double-height community gardens. The towers hold high-end apartments that are pushed to the edge of the elliptical plan to maximize views and contact with the exterior skin. This skin pattern was designed with the intention of modulating between the monumental mass of the tower and the human-scale lifestyle of the apartments.
