A successful designer must believe in something of significance. Dominic Dube, the French-Canadian architect, painter, and principal of DDIR Architecture Studio based in Bangalore, India does practice what he believes. DDIR is an award-winning firm thriving on over 3 decades of experience of the principal himself, across Canada, Italy, Mexico, Thailand, Greece, France, USA and India. The firm excels in the creation of projects varying in type and scale; from small intimate spaces to vast urban planning schemes. Dominic’s beliefs lie in seamlessly integrating architecture and design by expressing: art – in nature; technology – in structure; life – in light; and culture – in spirit. These chief ideals are seen throughout his projects, and across all spheres.
Assetz Stratos, a stack of contemporary residential condominiums in Bangalore, typifies the artist persona of Dominc Dube. He believes in manifesting what we as humans already know, and endorses that architects are simply media or channels for manifestations. Manifesting one such physiology is at Stratos. Developed by Bangalore-based Assetz Property Group (APG), Stratos is an expression of strength. The first glimpse at Stratos only leaves one in bewilderment of its own might. The form resembles a suspended glass box. It is not an overplay that your mind is left at wonder, for reasons aplenty.
A cause of the marvel due to which the viewer’s eyes are amazed is the way in which the floor layers are stacked atop each other, all forbearing on one single element of support. This sole pier is the structural core, doubling up as the service core. This allows for the mass to be suspended and afloat above ground. Cross bracing structurally adds to stability, while visually completing the composition.
Second of the reasons causing astonishment to the observer, is the mere sense of design of the condominiums. This is true from whole to part, outside to inside. Consistency in design capitulates to the different realms of design – architectural, structural, and interior – in a way as if to enunciate their interrelations. The contemporary conviction of the designer translates to four boutique residences that are centrally air-conditioned and fully automated. From floor levels 1 to 3, each floor is dedicated to one condo of 2,327 square feet area, manifestly with exclusive access. Floor levels 4 and 5 are devouted to the penthouse, the peak of Stratos, at 4,645 square feet in area. Spread across two levels, this caters to ultimate lavish living. An open-plan system of design across the residences allows for free flowing effects.
Situated in the city-centre, Stratos is the result of DDIR Architecture Studio’s vision of private Hotel Particulier, the French nineteen century luxurious way of living. The upscale residences are responsive to the swish context, encompassing some of Bangalore’s elite hangout places. Stratos revives the term high-end, using modern simplistic design elements. Minimalism is at the forefront at Stratos, quite contradictory to the meaning implied by the name, reminiscent of the contradiction the viewer’s eyes feel, at the sight of Stratos!
